Next FontShop: A Bold Undertaking

Check it out. The next FontShop website is in beta. It’s raw. It’s unfinished. It’s in flux. But we’re launching it anyway.

Why? Because we love the new design, and we want YOU to help us shape its development. Seriously. The site at next.fontshop.com is an open invitation for you to explore, have fun and test out the simplified, playful new design.

And then we want you to let loose: tell us what you love about it, what you hate about it, and above all, tell us what you want us to add to it. As you submit ideas and requests, we’ll continue to build on the initial foundation-stone, regularly publishing new features and modules based on your feedback over the coming months.

It’s all part of an experiment in collaborative agile design, jointly conceived and fostered by FontShop and the creative minds at Edenspiekermann. Its purpose is to get you, the public, to participate in the design process, and help create the perfect place to find fonts.

In the true spirit of the project, we’re not even going to bother extolling the beauty and the simplicity of the design here. Instead, we say only: go see it for yourself. Form your own opinion. Then tell us what you think.

Introducing FontShop WebFonter

webfonter_1Designers can now test out the thousands of webfonts from FontShop.com on existing websites, free of charge. FontShop International is pleased to introduce its WebFonter tool available at webfonter.FontShop.com.

Aiming to make the web design process as seamless as possible, WebFonter allows designers to “try before they buy,” by previewing actual typefaces in any existing site. The tool can be used as a Chrome extension, browser bookmarklet or by entering a URL directly at webfonter.fontshop.com.

webfonter_2

Users can replace headline or body (paragraph) text, specific fonts, or, using custom CSS selectors, anything they want with FontShop webfonts.

WebFonter can be used during the design and development process –  a critical time for font choice. The target website does not need to be publicly accessible in order to test-drive webfonts. This hugely important feature marries well with the current web design trend towards designing directly in the browser, and makes WebFonter an extremely useful and powerful tool.

By pairing Webfonter with the FontShop Plugin, designers can now easily preview fonts in the concept stage of design from print to web.

Why yes, we are wearing something different!

Congrats Wedding Month Winners!

We had so much fun hearing your wedding stories and seeing your gorgeous designs throughout June’s Wedding Month! Today we’re pleased to announce the winners of our two contests.

GreatPairsWinners

Congratulations to Great Pair, Katie & Jerry, on winning help from type expert David Sudweeks to pick out $100 toward fonts for their wedding. Our blog readers voted Katie’s story their favorite. We love it too – and are sure David will find typefaces for them with that perfect “opposites attract” feel.
DesignWinner

Jerry and I met in college while on a trip with mutual friends to an ice skating rink. By the end of our first night I knew that he was an accomplished figure skater (hot!), that he loved Bill Nye the Science Guy, and that I was completely smitten. It took me a while to convince him that we were perfect for each other…I had a head of bright pink hair, he definitely did not; he was a gamer, I was not; he was the pickiest eater I had ever met (the only fruit he ate was apples, his diet consisted of plain pasta, rice, chicken, and Goldfish crackers), I was kind of horrified that my usual method of wooing (lots, and lots of food) was just not going to work. But here we are, almost 5 years later. I’ve become a gamer, he eats like a human, and no one has pink hair. I cannot imagine my life without him. Somehow, together we equal more than the sum of our parts, and our differences balance us. We’re getting married 10/4/14 (10+4=14! nerds!) and would like to find typefaces that are as great together as we are.

“We’re so excited,” Katie says upon winning the contest. “We live in Boston, MA where Jerry is working towards a PhD in Chemistry and I am working as a fledgling museum exhibit developer. We’re getting married in the Hudson Valley near the college (and ice skating rink) where we met.”

With dozens of entries into our Design Contest, the competition remained close on our Pinterest board until the end. A big congratulations to Wes Lyman, whose stationery design for his 2012, garnered 63 likes by voting deadline. We echo Wes’ sentiments: “The board hosted a lot of great work!” “

Wes used SudtiposBurgues Script and Adobe Garamond Pro to create this gorgeous collateral letter pressed in PMS 325 and Black on natural white letter press paper.

A huge thanks to all of those who entered both contests! Let us know if in the comments if you’d like to see more in the future.

Send Us Your Typographic Wedding Designs and Win!

This month on the blog we’ll be highlighting some of our favorite wedding designs.  We also know our talented readers have certainly come up with some fabulous ones of their own. We’d love to inspire others with your creative collateral, so we’re announcing the first of our wedding month contests for designers.

Wedding-Invitation

Whether it’s invites, placecards, programs or something else skillfully using typography to highlight that special day, share examples* with us by emailing your submissions to contest@fontshop.com by Sunday, June 16 (before 11:59 p.m. Pacific). Only three submissions per designer please (if you submit more than three, only the first three chronologically will be entered). We’ll then pin them to our Pinterest page and tally votes through the number of “likes” through June 30.

The winner will be announced on Monday, July 1 and will receive $100 credit on FontShop.com.

Look forward to watching your designs walk down the aisle!

*Please note all submissions must be designed by the entrant. We reserve the right to disqualify submissions that do not meet this criteria.

In April we rolled out our free Fontshop Plugin, which allowed you try any of the 150,000+ fonts in our library within the context of your own artwork in Adobe Photoshop (CS5, CS5.5 and CS6) for free. We heard you loud and clear and are happy to announce that the plugin now supports Adobe Illustrator (CS5  and CS6) as well. This is a great new way to find the perfect typographic fit for your project.

Features:

  • Preview fonts in your document

Get the plugin from our website at FontShop.com/plugin. If you’ve already got the previous version of FontShop plugin for Photoshop, be sure to uninstall it first through Adobe Extension Manager, then install the latest one. The new one works in both Photoshop and Illustrator.

The plugin page includes step-by-step instructions and FAQs on how to use this handy tool. If you have additional questions, we also have a help page on FontShop that should assist you. The plugin is still in beta, so please feel free to leave your feedback for our developers.

Have you used the plugin? What do you think?
