JAF Bernini Sans

The JAF Bernini Sans Superfamily is one of those collections that’s easy to overlook. On the outside, it’s a refined humanist sans (in two distinct styles) that speaks plainly and walks in dignified fashion across the page. But the subtle loveliness and thoughtfulness with which the type sets and makes use of common yet little-known features is what caught my eye. These details above all show the experience of its designer, Tim Ahrens, in working with text.

For example, how often do you come across an all-small-caps acronym within text whose presence appears too greatly diminished? Or an ALL CAPS setting that draws too much attention to itself? In the Bernini Sans Superfamily, the designer takes advantage of the ‘All Caps’ case feature (Shift+Command+K in InDesign) to set caps at sized and spaced just right to solve this common problem.

The superfamily comes in two variants—the cool humanist JAF Bernino Sans, and the friendly, slightly warmer JAF Bernina Sans. Each comes in five weights across four widths: Regular, Narrow, Condensed and Compressed. Companion italics span the Regular width only.

As a special introductory offer, get the entire set or individual weights at half off through September.

Nick Cooke’s Rollerscript

If you’re the perceptive type, you may already have guessed that the handwritten note reproduced below is not what it seems. Just in from G-TypeNick Cooke’s Rollerscript is the latest in a long line of naturally flowing, casual handwriting types – but since what this one does, it does very well – I thought I should take it out for an extra walk this afternoon.

When searching for a handwriting face that has just the right tone, a thoroughly human option can be difficult to find. Faces that introduce a bit of human variation can convince with one word and fail to persuade with the next; while those that appear too normalized or systematized disclose their origins too readily. Rollerscript seems to have arrived at a good balance by both introducing spontaneity through a complex system of expertly fit character combinations, and by adhering to a relatively regular axis. As you type, Rollerscript’s many alternate forms and ligatures pop into action, changing and swapping out characters to ensure consistent personality, better overall fit, and that identical glyphs never appear too near one another on a line.

Rollerscript comes in two variants, Rough (pictured above) and the more simplified Smooth. The rough texture recreates well the edge left behind from a quickly pulled ball-point pen on inexpensive paper.

New Webfonts

Now that we’re getting new fonts in each week, it’s difficult to keep the webfonts from mixing in; So we’ve prepared a list of our latest fonts for web—available to license, download and serve yourself on your own webserver, or additionally within the FontFont range, from our partner Typekit. One easy way to find all the webfonts from a given foundry is by visiting the Webfonts page and selecting them in the Foundry drop-down menu. Anything you’re looking for but not seeing here? Let us know! Not all foundries have yet begun the process of converting their type to web formats, but with your encouragement, their webfonts are bound to hit the market soon.

Here are the latest webfonts, including some you may have missed this summer.

Sutturah Up Close

Octavio Pardo’s beautiful script heavyweight Sutturah deserves every pound of praise it gets. Its deep-cut traps help to distinguish individual strokes where otherwise room wouldn’t allow, and the same give a plump dimensionality to the face.

An unrepentant display type, Sutturah casts off legibility concerns in pursuit of its main goal, being an eye-catching, casual, fun script of impossibly heavy proportions. Check the character set to see all its awkwardly necessary improvisations, like its corkscrew w.

Like all Rosetta faces, Sutturah supports multiple scripts, in this case Latin & Cyrillic.
