Buyer’s Guide: Finding the End User License Agreement

Here at FontShop, we have thousands of fonts. In turn, we sell fonts from many different foundries. Each foundry has their own End User License Agreement (EULA), which is important to read before purchasing a font.

There are a couple different ways to find the EULA for a font. If you know the foundry of the font you’re interested in, you can go to our Licenses page, which lists out every EULA by foundry.

You can also find a link to a font’s EULA at the bottom of its product’s page:

End User License Agreements are rules to follow when you want to use a font. You’ll want to keep in mind that you are not purchasing the typeface itself, but a license to use the font software. Don’t forget to read the EULA!

Buyer’s Guide: Can this webfont be linked to Typekit?

Currently, you can only link webfonts from FontFont (also known as Web FontFonts) — webfonts that begin with “FF” in their name, such as FF Meta Web or FF Suhmo Web — to your Typekit account.

When you purchase a Web FontFont, you will be given a voucher code that links your Web FontFonts to your Typekit account. Send your Web FontFonts to Typekit by clicking on the link given to you when your purchase is complete. When you click on this link, you should be taken to a page that should look something like this:

At this point, you will be able to double-check to make sure you are linking the correct Web FontFonts to your Typekit account. You can then sign in to your Typekit account or create a new account.

If you don’t find a yellow box with a link to send your webfonts to Typekit when you’ve completed your purchase, you can still use webfonts. Remember, Typekit is completely optional and all webfonts on FontShop can be self-hosted!

Buyer’s Guide: Rendering Sample Text

If you’ve ever wanted to see just a few letters together in a font or how a short phrase looks in a certain typeface, you can use our Custom Sample Toolbar.

buyersguide-sampletext1 There’s a small text field in the Custom Sample Toolbar that will say “Enter sample text…” — type in your phrase or the glyphs you want to see and remember to hit Return or Enter (your sample text will not render automatically as you type). Once you’ve pressed Enter, the fonts in your search result or FontList will render:

If you see blank spots or empty squares in place of a letter or glyph, then that means that font does not contain that specific character. This is more likely to happen if you enter sample text in a different language, but we do have many fonts that have wide language support.

If you need to compare how the text looks between certain fonts that aren’t right by each other in a list, you can Favorite the font and the font will be saved in your Favorites list with the sample text you originally previewed it in.

You can also use the Custom Sample Toolbar to preview OpenType features of a font!

And don’t forget: for the majority of fonts that we do have available on FontShop, we have a plug-in that allows people to play around and test fonts within Adobe Creative Suite CS5 or higher (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign only) before buying — this is completely free and easy to download and use.

Buyer’s Guide 101

With the New Year comes new questions … or the same ones. Below is our list of the best Buyer’s Guide tips we have for any type enthusiasts and designers out there who want to license fonts during their winter break or anyone who’s missed our previous Buyer’s Guide tips:

1. Font Formats
Double check the fonts in your cart before licensing them to make sure you have the format you need or the format that has the best compatibility with the system or programs you’re running!

2. What is EOT and WOFF?
Increase your understanding of the web formats available before licensing fonts for the web.

3. Can All Webfonts Be Linked To Typekit?
You’ve learned the difference between desktop licensing and web licensing and have decided you need to purchase some webfonts. If you have a Typekit account, read this Buyer’s Guide tip to make sure if the webfonts you want can be linked to your Typekit account or not.

4. Buying Fonts For Others
Still haven’t gotten gifts for a few people on your list? Don’t worry, you can buy fonts for them — that way, you won’t have to deal with getting out of your pajamas and trying to find parking in crowded shopping lots the day before Christmas.

Buyer’s Guide: Buying Fonts For Others

For those of you who have designers in your family or friends that would light up at the idea of some new swashes to play around with in Illustrator this holiday season, how about getting them a font that they’ve had their eye on? This may also be the chance to license some fonts for your parents to replace those dreaded system defaults on their old computer sitting in the living room at home.

If you’re thinking that licensing a typeface like Aranjuez Pro may be the best present for your loved ones, be sure that their name and address is under the Licensee Address information before placing your order — they will need to be licensed to use the font before you send it to them, so don’t forget to double-check this part!

Once you’ve added the fonts to your cart and entered your payment information, you’ll be able to change the Licensee information when you review your order on the Order Confirmation page. The Licensee Address will default to the primary address listed in your account, so you’ll need to change it if it’s still under your name. A link to change the Licensee Address will be under the second section with the Address Information; when you click to edit the Licensee info, you’ll be able to enter the new information. Be sure to fill in all required details!

When you’re done entering the new license address, click on the “Next” button and you’ll be able to complete your order. Since you’ll be getting the download link after completing your purchase, you’ll need to download the ZIP file with a copy of the EULA to give as a gift — send it off in an email the night before Christmas and wait for a fresh design with the newly licensed typeface!

Buyer’s Guide: OpenType Feature Controls

Last week we went over the Character Set tab and how you can view OpenType features that are available within a font. But did you know you can test OpenType features in the Custom Sample Tool Bar? To access the additional controls, click on the gear icon located on any page that shows renders.

Buyer’s Guide: Character Set

Located on every product page, the Character Set tab will show you every glyph that is available within a specific font. Since an OpenType font can contain over 65,000+ characters, this feature will help you scan through a font quickly for particular features you need. We’ll use FF Tisa Sans Pro Regular as an example. A quick glance shows that there are 892 glyphs that make up the font.

Previewing each and every glyph can be tedious so we’ve listed all the OpenType features available within the font. Just click on a feature to filter a specific Character Set view. As you can see below, FF Tisa Sans Pro Regular has true Small Caps.

Try it today when you’re making your font selection. If you don’t see a feature you need, then feel free to contact FontShop for help.

Buyer’s Guide: History

With over 150,000 fonts to choose from, FontShop is a great place to browse for the perfect typeface you need. To help you with your journey we created the History section.

The History section, located in the upper right corner of FontShop, keeps track each font or product that you view on our site. If you’re logged in, then up to 250 products can be stored. Use it when you want to go back and see a font you may have forgotten to add to your Favorites.

Buyer’s Guide: Favorites and Tagging

Saving your favorite fonts on FontShop is easy. On every product we license you can click on the star icon to add the font to your Favorites.

You can access your starred fonts by clicking on Favorites in the right hand corner of FontShop.

When you’re in your Favorites, you can also add tags to all the fonts you’ve gathered. These tags are only visible to you when you are logged into your account.

You can use tags to group script fonts, compare fonts for particular project, or even bundle them in specific genres.

You’ll need to have an account to store your favorite fonts, so sign up for account now. If you already have an account, make sure you’re logged in.
